My Outside Magic
My outside magic experience was when we went to the zoo today. It has probably been about 13 years since I have been to the zoo, so it was nice to relive this experience again but from an older perspective. As soon as you enter, you are greeted with a family of gorillas, and that honestly sets the tone for everything. It was kind of crazy seeing how big they were but also how human they felt. Their hands and feet looked almost identical to ours, just way bigger, and watching the mother take care of her baby made it feel even more real. It didn’t feel like I was looking at something completely different from me; it felt familiar in a weird way.
After that we went to the Elephant Springs and saw a baby elephant with its mom. The whole area was built to look like a real watering hole, and you could tell how much space they had to move around. Then we walked through the African Savanna section where there were giraffes just casually walking around, along with other animals like ostriches in the distance. It actually felt like you were stepping into a different environment, not just looking at animals in cages.
One part that stood out to me was how each habitat was designed to match where the animals actually come from. Like in the Asian Falls area, there were tigers and other animals surrounded by greenery, water, and rocks that made it feel more natural. Same with the Texas Wild section, where the animals were ones you would actually find around here, which made it feel more connected to where I live.
At the same time, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that these animals aren’t truly free. Walking through, I kept thinking about how different their lives would be in the wild. But I also realized the zoo puts a lot of effort into conservation and protecting species that might not survive otherwise, which made me feel a little better about it.
What made this whole experience “outside magic” for me was not just seeing cool animals; it was realizing how much you miss when you don’t slow down and actually look. I’ve probably driven past nature or even animals before and never really thought about it. But today, just watching how animals move, interact, and live made everything feel more detailed and meaningful. Overall, I really enjoyed spending a few hours there after so long. It reminded me that even something that seems normal, like going to the zoo, can feel completely different when you actually pay attention.
